Lock-ins for Technology and Reading
Marshall organizes many after-school and weekend programs for its students. One of the more intriguing is the yearly Reading Lock-in, a "reading slumber party" where students and parents spend a Friday night in the school reading books. Parents who attended said that the students were very excited about spending the night in the school reading. Some rooms were designated as reading rooms, others as snack rooms, and others as sleeping rooms. Parents and teachers volunteer to chaperone this event and students say that they look forward to it each year.
Because the reading program is successful, the school recently adapted a similar program for technology. The Technology Lock-in, held on a Saturday afternoon, invited sixth grade students from the four feeder schools to meet the Marshall teachers, students, and gain hands-on experience with some of the technology they will use when they attend Marshall. This was a great opportunity for incoming students to gain a sense of familiarity with their future middle school and for current Marshall students to act as mentors and guides to an incoming class of students.
